Little Shepherd’s Spring Suggestions

Summary

The garden would benefit from regenerative pruning and mulching; plus a few plant additions (if there is a budget for this) would add balance to varying height borders, increase seasonal blooms, give impact in key areas and more rhythm in others.

Regenerative pruning

Additional labour: Hattie and a colleague for a day: £436.80 incl VAT.

Mulch:

3 bulk bags of composted bark would be ideal. 2 would work.

Additional labour: Hattie and a colleague for a day: £436.80 incl VAT.

Staking:

4 chestnut poles - the rose by the entrance of the garden needs support to grow and bloom to its potential.

Materials: Approx £45 incl VAT.

Walls:

The walls are such an asset in the garden and great for training existing planting up, where this was intended, but a lot have lost their fixings and wires, could these be restored? And perhaps to a higher height than previously?

Long term, if desired, there is room for more climbers, perhaps some repeat flowering climbing roses?

Existing plant replacements:

Pineapple Broom - nearly dead and rotting at base - I've pruned it but may be worth replacing it and training it against the wall.

Ceanothus 'Concha' - nearly dead and only one branch. Replace?

Plant Additions:

The Magnolia grandiflora is so beautiful. I wondered about adding a low, evergreen shrub with medium leaves to the border adjoining it, to highlight and compliment.

Is there the opportunity to re-jig this border? The plants in full maturity are losing their original spacing, if moved around it could look more harmonious.

Five shrubs recommended to extend seasonal display and structure:

Choysia 'Aztec Pearl' @ £20.15 for 2L pot

Sambucus ‘Guicho Purple @ £22.75 for 2L Pot

Drymis lanceolata @ £22.75 for 2L pot

Abelia grandiflora @ £22.75 for 2L Pot

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Gold Star’ @ £22.75 for 2L Pot

Grass:

The addition of a grass, perhaps 3 or 5 of the same species, would give beautiful movement and winter interest:

Miscanthus ‘Dixieland’ @ £19.50 each for 2L pot

Miscanthus ‘Vanilla Sky’ @ 19.50 each for 2L pot

Perennials to extend the season / flower impact:

Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' x 3 @ £16.99 for 2L pot

Sangusorba 'Plum Drops' x 3

Helenium 'Rubinszerg' x 6
