 Garden Design Proposal

Existing Garden

Brief:

  • Lawn not working, turn into gravel with stepping stones in it (shingle advised as gravel can get used as cat toilet)

  • Raised beds not working as desired - replace area with sandstone slabs?

  • Gate for wind tunnel by fence

  • Drainage hellish as steep drop the other side

  • Rosemary slowly being taken back

  • Extended flower beds, with bark mulch

  • Likes Scented flowers, to include thyme

  • Nice stumps in border to use as feature

  • Bindweed and Creeping Buttercup in borders

  • Water feature in corner as focal point (pond?)

  • Work around sycamore stump in patio

  • Borrow from the landscape, there is view of a purple beach tree which is quite striking

  • Pots

Garden Concept Design, V.2.

Birds eye view

Patio area is squared off, lining up with the edge of the Acer trunk. A pond is placed next to the patio, with a sloped brick surround, which also forms the edging for the curve of the main border. The red of the brick surround complimetns the red tone in the patio stone. Left over stones from the patio are used to create stepping stones in the central gravel area, which is soft planted with Convovulus ceonorum, creeping thyme and Erigeron karvinskianus. A large pot planted with a small olive tree is placed centrally in the gravel area, to add focus and give definition to the gravel garden. The height of the potted olive tree makes the garden feel bigger, by breaking up the view to the whole garden and giving a central feature to walk around.

View of the garden from the main path and entrance way.

The addition of a Sambuccus nigra ‘Black Lace’ and a low shrubby Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ compliment the red and purple tones of the existing Cotinus, as well as picking up the red tones in the patio and the purple beach in the distance. Additional Cistus help give evergreen architecture to the garden, in keeping with the gravel garden, Mediterranean feel.
